Black Sand, Waterfalls, and Glaciers

The South Coast of Iceland (from Reykjavik to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon) is one of the most visually dramatic stretches of coastline on earth — black volcanic sand beaches, towering waterfalls, glacier tongues descending from the Vatnajökull ice cap, and the glacier lagoon where icebergs calve into still water and wash onto the Diamond Beach. A South Coast day tour from Reykjavik covers the highlights in approximately 10–14 hours (the drive to Jökulsárlón and back is approximately 750 km round trip — a long day but a spectacular one).

Key Stops

Seljalandsfoss — a 60-metre waterfall with a path behind the curtain of water. Walking behind the falls (waterproofs essential — you will get soaked) is one of Iceland’s most distinctive experiences.

Skógafoss — a 60-metre, 25-metre-wide waterfall of tremendous power, with a staircase to a viewpoint at the top and the beginning of the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail.

Reynisfjara — a black volcanic sand beach with dramatic basalt column stacks (Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore) and the Hálsanefshellir basalt cave. The beach is beautiful but dangerous — the sneaker waves (unpredictable large waves that surge far up the beach) have killed visitors. Do not turn your back on the ocean.

Vík í Mýrdal — Iceland’s southernmost village, with views of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier looming behind the town.

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon — icebergs calving from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue float in the lagoon, drifting toward the sea. Boat tours navigate among the icebergs. The lagoon’s scale, the blue-white ice, and the silence create an extraordinary atmosphere.

Diamond Beach — directly adjacent to Jökulsárlón, where icebergs that have floated to the sea wash back onto the black volcanic sand, sitting on the dark beach like scattered diamonds. The contrast of blue-white ice on black sand is one of Iceland’s most photographed scenes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the whole South Coast in one day?

A day tour to Jökulsárlón and back is possible (10–14 hours, approximately 750 km round trip) but long. Shorter day tours cover Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and Reynisfjara without reaching Jökulsárlón (approximately 8–10 hours). A two-day trip with an overnight in Vík or Höfn is the more comfortable format for the full coast.

Is Reynisfjara beach safe?

The beach is dangerous. Sneaker waves (sudden, powerful waves that surge far beyond the normal waterline) have killed visitors. Never turn your back on the ocean, never walk close to the water’s edge, and follow the safety signs. The beauty is real; the danger is equally real.

When is the best time for the South Coast?

Summer for the midnight sun, the waterfalls at full flow, and the warmest temperatures. Winter for the northern lights, the frozen waterfalls, and the dramatic low light — but shorter days limit the driving time.
